Mental Health First Aid Australia is not a mental health or referral service, but we can help guide you to crisis and support services.   

If you are providing mental health first aid support to someone you know, you can use this list to help connect them with professional help.   

National support numbers

  • Lifeline | 13 11 14
    Crisis support and suicide prevention services available via phone, text message or online chat. 
  • 13Yarn | 13 92 76
    Counselling and crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 
  • Kids Helpline | 1800 551 800
    Counselling for kids, teens and young adults aged between 5 and 25 available via phone and online chat.  

  • SANE Helpline | 1800 18 7263
    Counselling, peer support, online groups and community forums for people aged 18+ with complex mental health needs and their family, friends and carers.  
  • Beyond Blue | 1300 22 4636
    Brief, confidential counselling services available via phone or online chat.  
  • Qlife | 1800 184 527
    Anonymous LGBTQIA+ peer support and referral available via phone and online chat.  
  • Open Arms | 1800 011 046
    Counselling for anyone who has served at least one day in the Australian Defence Force and their families.

The Translating and Interpreting Service is also available to provide free phone translation support for people with English as a second language. You can call 131 450 or visit their website.

If you or someone you know is in distress or in immediate danger, dial 000 as soon as possible.

Other supports available

If you or someone you know doesn’t feel comfortable calling any of the above services, you can also:  

  • talk to a family member, friend or another trusted adult 
  • speak to a GP, counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist 
  • visit a hospital emergency department.
