Welcome to Mental Health First Aid Day
This year, on Tuesday 19 August, join us for the inaugural Mental Health First Aid Day – a national day of action to celebrate and raise awareness of the vital role MHFAiders and Instructors play in creating circles of support across our communities.
With the right knowledge and skills, every conversation can be a turning point in someone’s life.
For 25 years Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) has been building circles of support around people facing mental health problems. Even though 1.5 million Australians are trained, MHFA remains one of our country’s best-kept secrets – but you can help change that.
For the first ever Mental Health First Aid Day, we’re shining a light on these circles of support and encouraging all Australians to learn life-saving conversation skills.

Why every conversation matters
1 in 2 Australians
will experience a mental illness at some time in their life
1 in 3 Australians
won’t seek help when they need it most
We spend up to 80% of our waking day in conversation – in person, on the phone, in virtual meetings, over text or via social media. These moments of connection are all opportunities to recognise the signs someone may be experiencing mental health problems and have a supportive conversation.
A mental health first aid conversation can:
Reduce stigma: Engaging in open, non-judgemental conversations about mental health can normalise talking about tough times and encourage people to seek or accept help when they need it.
Open the door to future conversations: Even if someone might not need help now, letting them know you care can create a safe space for them to reach out when they are ready.
Provide a lifeline to support: Many people struggling with their mental health feel alone and are unsure how to ask for help. Knowing how to reach in and what to say can take the pressure off and guide them toward the help they need
Making a difference, one conversation at a time
Just as physical first aiders know how to provide initial assistance in a medical emergency, Mental Health First Aiders are equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to mental health problems or crises.
Mental Health First Aiders are in homes, workplaces, schools, friendship groups and neighbourhoods. They are anyone and everyone. Hear inspiring stories from our community who are making a difference, one conversation at a time.
