How Margaret Saunders inspires change through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid

Margaret Saunders is deeply committed to improving mental health literacy and support within First Nations communities. This commitment was recognised at the 2025 National Instructor Summit where Margaret received the Champion Award – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander MHFA Program award.

Drawing strength from personal experience, she delivers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid with compassion, cultural understanding, and a powerful drive to equip others with the skills and knowledge to recognise, respond to, and access specialised mental health support.

What motivates you to continue delivering MHFA courses?

I am motivated to deliver Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid courses because I am passionate about empowering individuals and communities to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.

My goal is to ensure that people, especially within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to seek support from professionals when needed. Many individuals may not know where to turn or how to access support, and these courses provide culturally relevant guidance and practical tools. By fostering understanding and trust, I hope to break down barriers and support the unique social and emotional needs of First Nations peoples.

Can you share a moment or breakthrough that you’ve experienced while delivering MHFA training?

One significant breakthrough for me occurred after the personal loss of my son to suicide several years ago. While I have always been committed to raising awareness and reducing the stigma around mental health, this experience profoundly deepened my passion and commitment. Now, my focus is not only on education but also on supporting others to navigate their own experiences with loss or suicidal thoughts.

I strive to create a safe space where participants can openly discuss their feelings, seek support, and hopefully find help before reaching a crisis point. This personal journey has reinforced the importance of the work I do and the impact it can have on others.

What advice or insight would you offer to fellow instructors looking to grow their confidence or deepen their impact?

My advice to fellow Instructors is to actively listen to others without judgement and to share your own experiences authentically. Creating an environment where participants feel comfortable sharing their stories is essential. When you relate your lived experiences in a way that resonates with participants, it encourages openness and meaningful discussion.

It is also important to continually build your knowledge about mental health, recognise the signs that someone may need help, and understand how to guide them toward appropriate support. By fostering empathy and understanding, Instructors can make a lasting impact on their communities.
